The Increasing Importance of Data Visualization: An Interview with ZingChart’s Thomas Powell from Huffington Post

“Some stories are not easily presented with visual patterns. Imagine a pie chart with 1,000 slices. This isn’t terribly consumable visually. Sure, more traditional bar charts and their ilk have their place, but they can be complex and hard for some to understand with large datasets. Because of this, infographics, network diagrams, treemaps, geographic maps, and other advanced forms of data visualization have become necessary and popular. Regardless of their forms, data visualizations must support the story. Charts must help the consumer get more out of the story.”

How data science is helping charities to fight hunger in the UK from The Guardian

“A mapping tool was used to show how the trust’s users are distributed geographically. Heat maps showing demand – the darker the colour, the greater the demand – have allowed us to visualise regional patterns of need. Even a cursory glance at the map suggests countless questions: how far do most clients travel? Are food banks located in the areas of greatest need? Why are particular crisis types more prevalent in certain areas?”

This is an incredible visualization of the world's shipping routes from Vox

“The researchers assembled data from the thousands of commercial ships that moved across the ocean in 2012. They then worked with the data visualization studio Kiln to make this map. You can use the toggles at the top of the map to break down the ships by type — container ships (yellow), dry bulk carriers (blue), oil and fuel tankers (red), gas carriers (green), and ships transporting vehicles (purple) — or zoom in on different regions.”“The researchers assembled data from the thousands of commercial ships that moved across the ocean in 2012. Look at how marketers tell stories with compelling data visualizations from CIO

“There is no shortage of large data floating around on the Internet, but fishing for stories in random numbers won't help you produce the best story. Instead, figure out the story you want to tell and then look for data that supports or challenges that story. The figures will be easier for you to interpret if you understand the data and it reflects your interests.”“There is no shortage of large data floating around on the Internet, but fishing for stories in random numbers won't help you produce the best story. How Big Data is powering advances in Data Visualization from Oracle

“Applications are undoubtedly the best way to visualize data for those not versed in the more complex elements of data science. They are built for particular use cases, meaning they provide the relevant data and insights in the most suitable way. Data can be presented in numerous ways to help ensure effective communication, but applications should be user-centric and customizable.”“Applications are undoubtedly the best way to visualize data for those not versed in the more complex elements of data science.
