How might we improve the abilities of the Office of the Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth to mobilize young people at global, national, regional, and local levels around advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
In 2012, the UN Secretary-General established the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth and appointed Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi of Jordan as the first-ever Envoy on Youth. The Envoy’s mandate is to
harmonize the UN system efforts on youth development,
enhance the UN response to youth needs,
advocate for addressing the development needs and rights of young people, as well as to
bring the work of the United Nations with and for youth closer to them.
In July, 2015 - in a project designed to expand the reach and impact of this office and the thousands of young people it supports - Unite Labs advised The Envoy through the planning and development launch of a digital platform for collective action to advance the SDGs. The platform will supports this in three ways:
Learn about the SDGs through curated, tailored multimedia content
Take action on realizing the SDGs via a marketplace of opportunities both online and offline
Connect with like-minded individuals and organizations
The platform will also serve stakeholders working on SDG advocacy and implementation by:
Amplifying campaigns, activities and initiatives in support of the SDGs
Serving as a directory of existing efforts for citizen engagement in the SDGs
Creating a space for collaboration and exchange among partners
